History of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.
First claimed in 1769 by Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola, the land in and around Camp Pendleton was permanently established in the late 1800s as a cattle ranch. In 1942, the ranch land was transformed into the largest Marine Corps base in the country, and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Named for Major General Joseph H. Pendleton, the camp has enjoyed a colorful heritage, preserving its storied past with careful conservation of the base's history and buildings, including the original home of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force's commanding general, which is now designated as a National Historic Site. Camp Pendleton is home to more than 400 species of mammals and birds, and the base takes care to protect several endangered species when planning for marine training exercises.

Camp Pendleton provides training facilities for several active-duty and reserve Marines, Army and Navy units, and training facilities for a number of other national, state and local agencies.
